This feature is an interactive visualisation of the East India Company's trade between 1760 and 1834. Use the map, line graph and sparklines to select markets, commodities and date ranges to explore.
The main map illustrates the EIC's markets for imports and exports. Each circle represents the value of imports (purple) and exports (green) into and out of each port. (Note that London was the port of entry and exit for all the EIC's cargo to and from the British Isles, and so is not illustrated this way.) The same information is illustrated in the accompanying pie charts.
The map is adjustable by date, commodity and market. Use the date fields above the map or the date slider below to adjust the date range the map displays; to select a specific commodity to display, use the top dropdown menu or the right-hand sparklines bar, or click on its segment in a pie chart. To isolate the display by port, and to see more information on the port selected, click any circle. Hover over a circle to see the numerical value it represents.
The right-hand bar contains 'sparklines' representing the amount or value of each commodity the EIC imported or exported. This column can be probed to display source maps and explanatory text relating to each commodity.
Hovering over a point on a sparkline displays the numerical amount or value represented by that point. Clicking on a sparkline (or on a pie-chart segment) will change the main map to display only the data for that commodity, and will display the commodity's explanatory text in the right-hand bar. In the case of exports from London, above the text there will display a map of the British Isles showing the commodity's source. The sparkline display can also be adjusted via the top dropdown menu and date fields.
The bottom line graph displays the total value of selected imports and/or exports over the selected date range. The default display is of all imports and exports over the full date span (1760-1834).
Adjusting the top menus, map or sparklines will adjust the line graph in tandem. Conversely, the date range displayed on the map can be adjusted by dragging the slider along the graph. Hovering over a point on the line graph will display the numerical value represented by that point. Pressing the 'play' button above the graph animates the graph and the map, illustrating the ebb and flow of trade in the selected commodity over time.
